Okay, I'm also a newbie, and while I agree that you don't need to read
anything before GR as a sort of build up, or preparation, I would argue
that GR is a huge freakin' book, and can be a bit offputting. I started
with Lot 49, and I was even nervous of that- kept thinking that I wasn't
qualified to get through it, somehow. But then I got hooked, and getting
hooked heavy was the inspiration to try GR- and I'm three quarters of my
way through GR for the first time, and can say wholeheartedly that it's
already made it into my all time favorite list. (And I'm planning on going
right on to Mason & Dixon as soon as I finish this one. Should I be
considering addiction counseling? :) )

To waffle, I say, if you want, go for GR. I've found it to be not nearly as
difficult as I'd heard; there are millions of things I'm missing, but I'm
getting more than enough to keep me moved and delighted. But if you're not
sure, why not look through Lot 49? It's short, and it will give you a
slightly toned down idea of what to expect.

Oh, and Pale Fire kicks butt. Definitely in my top five.
