I read COL49 after GR and found it OK... but a little flat. If I had read
it first I might have passed by GR. V was much more fun for my taste, and
maybe a better example of a style that is later expanded in GR. GR is
thick, but not tedious at all. I often found myself laughing out loud.
Some of the extra-long sentences may require one to go back and re-read from
time to time, but it's much easier to follow than Ulysses...
As for hair-shirts in the humidity, I much prefer vodka and soda in the pool
to augment my reading.

But if I want to make a P fan for life - I don't think I would risk going
there first. The joys it evokes are not absent in COL49 or V, only the depth
of the detail.....
