Newbies, what to read first

I'd recommend Lot 49 as well, if only 'cos it's brief,
and perhaps because it's the one I stumbled upon
first. I know more than a few people who STARTED GR,
and, of those who actually made it past the first
fifty pages (if even), a few who actually even
finished the damn thing (I'm talking both casual and
hardcore-to-professional readers here). Of those who
made it across the finish line, only one ended up
hating it anyway, but ... so to those not esp.
motivated by either the academic lash or a literary
deathwish (and I never HAD to read Pynchon myself),
I'd say, start small, or, at any rate, short. TCOL49
is, IMHO, a helluva book, and underrated here. Then
again, order of publication wouldn't hurt, either, V.,
Lot 49, GR, SL (unless you wanna read the short
stories first), VL, M&D ...
