Paul or the NT or Christianity, has to contend with the Greeks and
reason.
Not so for the author of Job.
OT man (Job) knew all about the uncertainties of life and he knew of the
waverings of faith because it was his experience and his tradition. The
OT God is very unpredictable and doesn't need reason to justify his ways
to men. The Christian God has to contend with the Greeks and reason. So
Paul said something like,
he knew that what he preached to the Greeks was so much foolishness to
the Greeks because they seek what they call wisdom and he can only tell
them about faith and doubt.
Did Christ defeat Death?
Christian faith, partly because of reasons influence, becomes much more
intense than OT faith. Sort of against reason and against Death. What's
so interesting about the NT faith is that is paradoxical, it is faith
that is at the center of man's personality and not reason. Although
after St. A, some silly theologians would attempt to straddle this
abyss. Christian faith as P knew very early on (in V., an important guy
might be Unamuno) is beyond reason.
Ironic indeed.
