It's a fascinating structure, made use of by the
metabolic micro-engines of all life, in plants- chloroplasts,
and, in plants and animals- mitochondria, generally creating
a multiplication of effect. It's Interesting that plants use
it to "eat" sunshine and carbon dioxide, and, to "excrete"
oxygen and sugar. In membrane biology, laminar structure
is often referred to as "lamellar," which is how I would
describe the structure of M&D. In living organisms
membranes control all the reactions, by allowing the
reactants to react only in certain places and at certain
times.
Of course, capacitors- used for storing electrical charge,
sometimes in enormous amounts- also make use of the
multiplying effect of lamellae, which brings to mind Franklin's
Leyden jars, and perhaps some special effect awaiting us at
the end of the novel.
