Hey Otto,
I'm not an astrologer either. Some people consider me an expert on drinking;
some of them live in Roxbury. But you are correct, my only objection was the
use of the legal drinking age as a criterion for the fixing of Slothrop's
age.
When you construct a complex machine, one misplaced cog on a wheel can bring
the whole apparatus crashing to a halt. The astrologer knew that there
was/is an age requirement for drinking alcohol in Massachusetts. He did not
take in to account the extreme selectivity of the enforcement of such laws.
In puritanical societies, there is a public norm, and a practiced norm. They
often vary wildly. I had a bit of fun with that. I did not intend to be
disrespectful. If you're post had not been interesting, and more than a
little cool, I would not have taken the time to find the little glitch in
the logic. Isn't that why we throw our ideas out there?
Peace brother. I look forward to discussing Gravity's Rainbow in
excruciating detail with you and others at some time in the near future.
Joe
