Foax:
Italian writer Sandro Veronesi makes his American debut this week with
"The Force of the Past." It's an amusing little Vespa ride through one
man's mid-life crisis. But for Pynchon fans, note that the book's coda
- not really part of the narrative - is a retelling of the "golden
screw" joke. Don't know why - though it does make thematic sense,
(though I see thematic sense in the golden screw joke no matter what
the theme is.) He doesn't reference Pynchon, natch. Calls it a "a very
old story, that many have told in many different ways, though at bottom
it has always been the same."
At bottom, indeed.
