AND, as you noted: 

Thomas #16:

Jesus said, "Perhaps people think that I have come to cast peace upon

world. They do not know that I have come to cast conflicts upon the
earth:
fire, sword, war."

At GR.693 Slothrop reads about the Bomb (bottom of page 693). ANd just
prior to the bomb we get, "mightn't we find some way back?" 

Return! 

The fork in the road sort of thing again. 

But in _The Future of Man_ Teilhard argues against Return. He argues
that the Bomb (and the Bomb equals the spiritual and intellectual
maturity of Man, an evolution in Christianity) will end the fire, the
sword, war...

And  will it end in fire or ice? 

The fire next time. 

Maybe the Church should not have suppressed Thomas and maybe they should
have burned Teilhard? 

Maybe, just maybe, the fragment from Thomas is spoken by Jesus to the
Virgin?
