In The Zone it is " like going into the darkest africa to study the
natives, and finding their quaint superstitions taking you over. And
Slothrop also feels his own beliefs "stronger now as borders fall away
and the Zone envelops him, his own WASPs in buckled black, who heard God
clamoring to them in every turn of leaf or cow lose among the apple
orchards in autumn..."
