Sand in the Wind Question

Does anyone on the P-list know anything about a novel entitled "Sand in the
Wind". I cannot remember the author's name but I remember that he was a
Marine Corps rifleman during the Tet offensive. The book formed much of the
story line for Kubric's "Full Metal Jacket". It contains a vivid,
heart-breaking description of the assault on Hue.

For the life of me, I can't remember the guy's name. I lent my copy to a
friend years ago. It is apparently out of print. Nobody seems to know what
I'm talking about when I mention it. It was the best fiction that I ever
read about the Viet Nam war told from a grunt's perspective.

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

It just came up in conversation over dinner with my 79 year old career
Marine uncle who fought in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. He couldn't remember
the author's name either. We were practically punching each other in the
head at a fine restaurant in an attempt to jog each other's memories.

Anybody?

Joe
