(Re-reading this; sorry for covering old, beaten, urinated-upon, sunbaked and Christ-blessed ground...)
It seems the dominant metaphor involves trajectory, or the semi-quantifiable path plotted between quantifiable points:
Money + Religion + Populism + Industry = the great challenge to humanity: do we rise above the obvious (trajectory), or get dragged down by our own momentum (gravity:force of world turning)?
To me it seems Pynchon is attempting to transcend politics, through this formula:
Existential delight + Gnosticism + "Individualism"(*) + ??? = good living
* - don't have a better term at this time/I don't like this either
This roughly mirrors thoughts I had in "offishial" studies of Pynchon, although few in the postmodern academic environment like to draw any firm conclusions from a work.
