"Controlling desire, however, is more problematic.
Hitler was known for some unconventional sexual
tastes. Heaven knows what Stalin was into. Even
fascists have needs, which, at least so they dream,
the enjoyment of limitless power will allow them to
indulge. So although they may be willing to attack
the psychosexual profiles of those who threaten them,
there may at least be some moment of hesitation before
they do. Of course when all the machinery of
enforcement is assigned to computers, which do not, at
least as presently designed, experience desire in any
form that we would find appealing, why then it will be
another story. But in 1984 that hasn't happened yet.
Because desire in itself cannot always be easily
co-opted, the Party has no choice but to adopt, as an
ultimate goal, the abolition of the orgasm.
"The point that sexual desire, taken on its own
terms, is inherently subversive is pursued here by way
of Julia, with her cheerfully lustful approach to
life...."

And, of course, the short list here would include
Freud, Reich, DeBeauvoir, Foucault, Irigaray ...
