Dave,

Thanks very much for taking the time to type out those
extracts from Pynchon's intro to _1984_. I don't have
a copy yet, but will soon.

Whatever else it says, I wonder if this essay provides
any clues to the subject matter about his next novel,
the way "Is it O.K. to Be a Luddite?" in 1984
anticipates Vineland, and "Nearer, My Couch, to Thee"
in '93 anticipates M&D (links to both essays at
http://www.libyrinth.com/pynchon/pynchon_essays.html).

P.S. Given the reference to Churchill (a leader to
whom the propaganda machine has tirelessly compared
Bush over the past may months) and wartime fascism of
even "democratic" countries, I don't think it's too
tough to discern at the least the outlines of how
Pynchon may be looking at the US these days.

Dave, I guess you just left out the parts where
Pynchon praises Bush's response to 9-11 and invasion
of Iraq, making explicit the sort of support of Bush
and his policies that has been attributed to Pynchon
here on the P-list?
