The quote above that I sent to the Pynchon List is Blair's (eric arthur
blair, AKA George Orwell).
Here it is again:
"All Left-wing parties in the highly industrialized countries are at
bottom a sham, because they make it their business to fight against
something which they do not really want to destroy."
It's important to insist that 1984 is a satire of Orwell's own immediate
milieu. The same can be said of GR. The readers, the baby-boomer
P-listers, have failed to make these connections clear, (say,
connecting GR with Vietnam or Civil Rights) because they are hell bent
on using 1984 and GR as propaganda in the current debates about current
political happenings.
