And not wanting "Dave's postings to be [their] first exposure to the Pynchon essay" is a perfectly apt reason to a) delete the posts before reading them, or b) ask that Dave postpone the discussion until more listers can obtain their copies. But that clearly wasn't Rob's intent in the original post, Keith; what he explicitly stated was that he didn't want the essay in segments, with omissions -- he wanted the whole thing, and whined about how someone should provide him with it. It's admirable that you want to optimistically interpret what Rob probably meant to say, attributing it to some nobel wish to maintain purity of reading amongst other listers, but it's pretty obvious to anyone that Rob was getting free selections from the essay and not only wasn't happy getting it despite the effort on Dave's part, but he wanted some sap to provide him with the whole thing, even "suggesting" someone scan it for him. THEN, he tried to back his way out of it by rephrasing what he stated, making it seem more polite. It's rude, it's ungrateful, it's cowardly, and it's unfortunate that Rob hasn't apologized to Dave (not a "big" apology, just a simple admission that he shouldn't have come across that way to Dave after the effort Monroe consistently puts forth on this list to keep discussion alive).

I stopped reading them when I realized they were out of order excerpts. No insult intended to Dave, but just because he has put effort into doing something a certain way doesn't mean a person is rude for not liking this particular
method. Those who appreciate it can enjoy it, and those of us who wish to wait and read it in its entirety can delete or save Dave's offerings for later consumption.
