This struck me as odd too. The internet has been opening up worlds to people
who've been caged within totalitarian states whose rulers don't want their
people to know what's going on in the larger world. It's much more about
freedom than control. I think Pynchon just likes to spout. It's a good thing
he doesn't do this often.
