as bart says to milhouse: "I thank you"
a couple of weeks ago as I was drifting out of sleep
(a condition DeLillo beautifully calls "brain melt" in
Body Artist) my brain was telling me that the scream
in the beginning of GR was most definitely
Gottfried's.
maybe it was a Zoyd moment with the bluejays but...
p.s. speaking of jazz, I highly recommend the Aussie
trio, The Necks--they play Coltrane-like long pieces
of 45 minutes plus
beautiful stuff.
p.p.s. someone should write a paper on DeLillo's use
of hysterion posterion (I know that's the rong
spelling--i like hysterical posterior much better) in
Cosmopolis--they way cause and effect are reversed in
eric packer's consciousness, they way he views the
world, and of course, by DeLillo himself within the
narrative.
the worst parts of the book are eric's numerous
meetings with his "wife" but the sufi funeral and
times square happening are quite good.
p.p.p.s. re: Quail's note on James Kellman--my
girlfriend is in the process of getting her PhD in
English, focusing, in part, on the Scots dialect, and
writers like Kellman and how they are viewed or
shunned becuase they write in the Scottish vernacular
whether it be Glaswegian or others, e.g.
There was lots of controversy over Kellman's winning
the Booker Prize for How Late it Was, How Late. Seems
some people think Scots as being perverted or a
debased language, sort of similar in a way to the
discussion herabouts regarding Black English.
