It's a conventional conservative technique (or all of politics, if you will)
to moralize and centralize a debate around children, whether it be their
innocence or what not, leaving anyone who does not happen to agree in the
realm of the immoral.
An incident that happened to one of my professors:
He was pulled over for some minor traffic violation, speeding or missing a
stop sign or something, and the officer, said to him when he came to the
window, "Don't you realize there's a school here?" And my professor wisely
decided not to respond with "Would it be okay if I mowed down an adult?"
