You're probably right (about Americans). Even though class and social
status distinctions are obvious, there seems to be quite a bit of
reticence over attributing social behavior to such embarrassing factors,
rather than, say, to ethnicity or religion (which may be even more
embarrassing). Americans love to both flout and flaunt inequality at the
same time. We have more fun that way.
