Recounting the events of the evening when Hazel committed suicide, Shade
notes how Sybil had called him down to watch the television program on
poetry where he was mentioned:

                                Then came your call,
            My tender mockingbird, up from the hall.
                                            (421-2)

This call seems to be the one preempted by Shade in the first canto:

                ... the naive, the gauzy mockingbird
            Retelling all the programs she had heard;
            Switching from *chippo-chippo* to a clear
            *Too-wee*, *too-wee*; then rasping out: *come here*,
            *Come here*, *come herrr'* ...
                                            (63-67)

Similarly, the description of the old man ("Father Time") and his dog who
discover Hazel's body (473-7) echoes the description of Hazel's performance
in the school pantomime as "Mother Time" (311-3).
