I am just noting that you claim only one definition for hue.

It is not sloppy that VN may have used another correct definition, namely
'hue' as 'shade, or gradation of color.'
It's right there in the dictionary, and in common usage. "2b" in Websters
and "2" in American Heritage. Why is it sloppy to use one of those
definitions?
