Please note that Vineland is the novel in which
Pynchon includes the folk wisdom that the CIA and its
then-director George Bush were, in effect, the biggest
dope peddlers in the world:

"Harken unto me, read thou my lips, for verily I say
that wheresoever the CIA putteth in its meathooks upon
the world, there also are to be found those substances
which God may have created but the U.S. Code hath
decided to control. Get me? Now old Bush used to be
head of CIA, so you figure it out."

"Clearing a path through thick woods" sounds a bit
like what Mason and Dixon were doing in the novel that
Pynchon was also working on while he wrote Vineland.
