Perhaps because he sees his work as writing, not as a
politician? 

Perhaps you forget that Pynchon, shortly after
September 11, 2001, gave an interview in which he came
down pretty hard on Bush.  And he savages the Bush
Administration in his introduction to 1984.  

I don't expect to see Pynchon filing papers to
challenge The Terminator as a candidate for governor
of California, howeve. I expect he'll continue to
critique the US through his writing.
