It's also funny the way Pynchon makes Z and H each so
involved with the Tube, H more Deeply of course,
folding his narcisissm into his addictive disease.
Zoyd is no addict; he consciously and creatively uses
the Tube to serve his material needs (fulfilling his
deal with Brock), an act of subversion vis-a-vis the
Reagan/Bush fascists who think they have him
completely under Their control. Poor Hector is simply
a junkie totally strung out on the Tube, moving beyond
the consumption of images that define his self-image
and the scope of his work to a kind of Skid Row
indifference to the precise form of his chosen
substance of abuse. That Hector's ultimate boss,
President Reagan, came down off the movie screen then
crawled out of the Tube into the White House where he
elevated those nasty old shoot-em-ups to the level of
foreign policy -- a tradition loyally followed by the
current ruler of the Reagan/Bush dynasty -- just adds
another loop on this media creation/consumption rollercoaster.
