Long defiance. Defying what?
Defying Death.
Yes, you can dicker about what kind of "integrity" Hector's long
defiance to the bureaucratic business at the GS-14 level is, but it is,
ironically, what Zoyd respects, the Maverick, the Clint Eastwood, the
aging but still skilled street cop who refuses to push pencil and paper
and jump through sugar coated hoops for promotion, but it is Hector's
defiance of Death that Zoyd is infatuated by. It is Hector's best
selling point. That's why their in business together. Can you trust your
business partners? Maybe you need a lawyer or an Insurance Policy. Van
Meter has a nice name but his idea of defying death is to take LSD.
