No, you're right. But we are told that Van Meter has "hustled" Zoyd, that
he's extremely involved in all the media crews, lighting, venue et. al and
that he very much wants Zoyd to make his scheduled appearance at the Cuke,
and that somehow (how?) he knows exactly where Zoyd is to call him at the
'Log Jam' to make sure he gets there in time. The way he lets Zoyd know
Hector's around also leads me to suspect that he has had a hand in
organising that rendezvous as well.

As I've said, I think Zoyd's "fear" is not of Hector, though he does realise
it is Hector that VM's gingerly referring to, but that something's up.

I hadn't noticed the way the imagery works here. Thanks. It's another
example of Pynchon appropriating "low" culture and references (scatalogical,
in fact) to "literary" ends.
