Is the beast Kinbote?  If so you are remakably close to Carolyn Kunin's
(prominent N-lister) Jekyll & Hyde (animal-skin?) theory.  And for her, Shade's
sexually abuse is also the cause, but not by Maud, though she was somehow
involved.  I've held off asking her any details for fear of spoiling the game. 
I'll wait till the end of this NPPF.
