But Hector's motives are more complex than your summary allows. For
example, he is not just following orders as Zoyd says. He is not simply
serving his boss's personal agenda. He has his own family, his own
career, his dreams, his great expectations too. He's one Pynchon's
finest characters. Really quite rounded out after all the film is
removed  and tube light dimmed.

But he is. He knows he will be. He's turned. He admits that he was
turned.  And he keeps jumping and jumping for the money that tells Them 
where he is and that he's still with the program.
