OK. It's done.

You really need to take a closer look at Hector. He's not at all what
you imagine. That's why I wonder if you are ignoring the book and
letting other stuff into your reading. Consider the fact that both
Hector and Zoyd are considered mad & addicted by other people in this
world of Vineland. Hector, not unlike Mucho in some ways, is subjected
to psychological trauma by the "professionals" de-toxers. As long as you
keep seeing Hector's badge and gun, and fail to see that he's a working
class slob just like Zoyd (listen to him) I think you'll fail to see
what Pynchon has created. I kid Paul N. a lot because he deserves it,
but his notion that Hector and Zoyd need each other in order to form
identities (CL49: that damned tube, cartoons mixed with dreams) and
maintain them is very smart. Maybe he should say more about that?

PS well, it looks like the Hudson river is too polluted for the NYC
Triathlon, all this fucking rain. And since my dialyzer machine is
finished now I'm off to Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, the usual
spots... be back for the Fall Semester. Yes, I'm teaching Vineland
again. And I'll be a student this year. OH BOY!

See you in the real, real, reel, Del Rey ... Camp
