I felt much the same about it. Wood better not give up his day job as a
critic.

The novel I most recently finished is Norman Rush's Mortals. Very
interesting  with regard to recent South African history and politics
including a few Herero making the best of it in the Kalahari. The hero
is a literary--a failed poet actually--American CIA agent working in
Botswana.

Recommended.
