"Zoyd had . . . ridden with the Bud Warriors and later the
Ambassadors. . . ." (VL, Ch. 4, p.37) Bud Warriors, beer riders of
infamy, fueled by Budweiser as they raced across the swampy tule roads
looking for immortality in a surf song, the next rocking wave, or death
at the unseen corner, "through the pre-suburban citrus groves and pepper
fields, lost a high percentage of his classmates, blank rectangles in
the yearbooks, to drunk driving or failed machinery . . ." (Id. at
37-38) James Dean the mutant king (David Dalton, 368 pages, 50 photos,
ISBN 0 85965 067 7, Paper, UK £9.99, no US rights), Dick Dale the king
of surf music, Budweiser the king of beers, and later Elvis the king
himself (p. 41); all kings of their domain. Quite a troupe of royalty
stepping out onto these pages, and quite a focus on the highly marketed
and highly talented by Mr. Pynchon. But onward to our next transition.
