". . . though the nearest surf at the moment was at Santa Cruz,
forty miles away over farm roads and murderous mountain passes. . . ."
(VL, Ch. 4, pp. 38) Perhaps the were just off the Pacheco Pass Road on
Route 152, state scenic highway which passes through farmland and the
San Luis Reservoir State Recreational Area from Santa Cruz over to San
Joaquin. The wedding could very well have "happened" at the San Luis
Reservoir State Recreation Area, 33 miles away from Santa Cruz. That
would make Sheriff Friendly from the Merced County Sheriff's Department.

And there was some dancing going on to the Corvairs version of
"Pipeline", a Dick Dale tune, with the friendly local sheriff "doing the
stroll," though it may have been the Jitterbug Stroll--a swing line
dance--we're not sure, in any event he's avoiding that punch cause he
knows what's there. It does date our Sheriff to the 1930's or 1940's
guessing his age during this flashback at, oh, 45 or so.
