Sorry I didn't make myself clear, T.  I didn't mean to
say I wanted chunks of Dewey or Melville, I wanted to
observe that throwing in huge, undigested chunks of
those -- and other -- authors seems to be a preferred
activity of yours here on Pynchon-L. That plus the
insulting questions -- I'm guessing you have learned
that you can get away with trying to ridicule your
students with such questions and remarks because of
the power dynamics that dominate in too many schools. 
Unfortunately, you're not the only schoolteacher I
know who can't break out of that habit of speech when
they find themselves talking to people who aren't
compelled by classroom discipline to listen politely.
