At the wedding:

"He smiled, squinting back, like a schoolmarm who still couldn't believe her
luck. A breeze had come up and begun to move the leaves of their tree.
'Frenesi, do you think that love can save anybody? You do, don't you?' At
the time he hadn't learned yet what a stupid question it was." (39)

The premise of Zoyd's question seems to be that he felt he had been saved by
Frenesi's love, or was going to be. Soon he was to be disabused of this
idea.
