Lots of Vietnam War veterans living in the country up
in Northern California -- and also some old draft
dodgers, which seems the more likely explanation for
leaving "real names left back along their by now
erased-enough trail."  

It's possible, but less likely, imo, that they are
tax-evading, off-the-Grid posse comitatus types, too.
