I have found pretty interesting the suggestion that RC may be a Vietnam Veteran. I am from South America and the spanish translation of "bush vet" is "veterano de la jungla" (jungle veteran).
I really appreciate your comments and the references you throw on snacks names, etc. because those references are impossible to gather for anybody that does not live in the United States. I have been in the list for a month or so and I have re-read Vineland since then, enjoying (and understanding) it a whole lot more. It is quite difficult to follow the text references as the page numbers you give in your comments does not match the spanish translation and that makes me read it again and again. I enjoy your comments and I am wondering how would the list will get when it reaches the ninja thing or the thanatoids. I can't hardly wait.
I remember when you were discussing how may Zoyd look like, if he is a big man or rather skinny. Unfortunately, my spanish edition of Vineland has a photo in the cover. It's a photograph of some members of a hippie commune from Oregon, taken by John Olson in 1969. It's pretty weird how book covers may induce you to stick an image to the characters, no matter how hard you try not to relate them, knowing perfectly well that it that the cover has nothing to do with the book itself. This particular photograph has an image superimposed. It's a telescopic sight of a gun. Its center is focused on the head of a blonde female hippie, as if somebody is about to shoot her. She is standing next to a bearded male. I regret to say, that I can't help those faces to be Zoyd's and Frenesi's for me.
Well, thank you.
