    Chip 'N' Dale - A pair of mischievous brown-furred
chipmunks who first appeared in the Walt Disney
theatrical animation Private Pluto (1943). Talking
with high-pitch, speeded up voices Chip 'N' Dale
interacted with such characters as Mickey Mouse, Pluto
the Pup, and Donald Duck. Years later, dressed in a
Indiana Jones like leather jackets and hats, Chip (and
Dale in Hawaiian Shirts) starred in the weekday
cartoon series CHIP 'N' DALE'S RESCUE
RANGERS/SYN/1989-93 as they aided other animals with
the assistance of friends Monterrey Jack, Gadget, and
Zipper. TRIVIA NOTE: The Chip 'N' Dale characters were
named by assistant director Bea Selck for the
eighteenth century furniture maker Thomas Chippendale.
Oh, by the way, Chip has the black nose; Dale has the
red. Their voices were provided by Jim Macdonald and
Dessie Flynn.

Chipmunks, The - Group of singing chipmunks
created by singer-songwriter Ross Bagdaserian
(b.1920-d.1972) in the 1950s. The Chipmunks-Alvin,
Theodore, and Simon-were featured in the 1958 novelty
songs "Witch Doctor" and "Christmas, Don't Be Late",
(aka "The Chipmunk Song") which sold several million
copies and won two Grammy Awards; and in the 1959
sequel recording "Alvin's Harmonica." Their popularity
earned them an animated cartoon THE ALVIN
SHOW/CBS/1961-62 that spotlighted the misadventures of
Alvin, the bratty one; Theodore, the plump, giggling
one; and Simon, the brainy bookworm as they lived in
the home of their manager, David Seville (the
pseudonym of Bagdasarian). The Chipmunk's unique sound
was created by recording the voice of Bagdasarian at a
slow speed and then playing it back twice as fast.
Originally, Bagdasarian was going to use rabbits or
butterflies as characters to match the high pitch
electronic voices that he created until his children
(Carol, Ross, & Adam) agreed that the speeded up
voices sounded more like chipmunks. Alvin, who played
a harmonica and wore a baseball hat was named after Al
Bennett, Vice President of Liberty Records. Simon, who
wore horn-rimmed glasses was named after Si Warnoker,
a record company executive. And Theodore, who was more
interested in eating than performing was named for Ted
Keep, the engineer of the first chipmunk record. In
1983 the Chipmunks returned to NBC in an updated
Saturday morning cartoon produced by Ross Bagdasarian,
Jr. entitled ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS. In 1988 the
program was retitled THE CHIPMUNKS and introduced a
group of female chipmunk singer called "The
Chippettes" (Brittany, Eleanor, and Jeannette). In the
fall of 1990 the show was retitled CHIPMUNKS GO TO THE
MOVIES as Alvin and company parodied famous motion
pictures.

Goofy Gophers, The - Two very polite but screwball
gophers who first appeared with Bugs Bunny in the
animated Looney Tunes cartoon Goofy Gophers (1947).
Their catchphrase is "No, after you!" Designed by
Warner Brothers director Bob Clampett, the gophers
were inspired by movie actors Edward Everett Horton
and Franklin Pangborn. When the gophers appeared on
THE BUG BUNNY SHOW, they were nicknamed "Mac & Tosh."

CHIPPENDALE, THOMAS (d. 1779), the most famous of
English cabinetmakers. The materials for the biography
of Chippendale are exceedingly scanty, but he is known
to have been the son of Thomas Chippendale I., and is
believed to have been the father of Thomas Chippendale
Ill. His father was a cabinetmaker and wood-carver of
considerable repute in Worcester towards the beginning
of the 18th century, and possibly he originated some
of the forms which became characteristic of his sons
work....
