european son /: pynchon mention in conference review

 + here in hamburg there's been a conference this week about the notion of 
 european literature. 33 writers took part in it, among them the romanian author 
 mircea cartarescu. as one reads in the review in today's faz (p. 35), he 
 included in his notion of european literature not only folks like dante, 
 cervantes, kafka or proust yet also - i can't help it: am just forwarding this 
 to you - thomas pynchon. how that? well, cartarescu thinks "high culture" to be 
 essentially of european character. "europäisch sei die hohe kultur, weshalb 
 auch der amerikaner thomas pynchon im lichtkegel cartarescus zum europäer wird. 
 das europa ohne grenzen habe die form seines gehirns, durch das sich keine 
 mauer aus beton zieht". europe without borders, says the romanian writer, has  
 the form of pynchon's brain in which we find no concrete wall....

 ps. if "high culture" is essentially european then philip roth and cormac 
 mccarthy are 'european writers', too. perhaps also david foster wallace whose 
 "infinite jest" i started to read yesterday ---
