Perhaps these names are meant to suggest a regressive linage and
possibly the end of the line.

The Di Fillipo review says Gibson doesn't think science fiction is any
longer possible, qouting from the new book:

"fully imagined cultural futures were the luxury of another day."

However Di F refers to the book as: 

"Gibson's not-quite-sf but not-exactly-not-sf thriller."
