<<I'm not sure about your Joyce criticism, but I think
I know what you're getting at. But before I respond
I'll let you make your own argument. Faulkner,
however, is pure passion. *Light in August* is the
epitome of southern gothic.>>

I'm with you here. Big Bill is top of the heap. I
love Light in August, and As I Lay Dying, and Absalom,
Ab.)lom, but my favorite is The Hamlet, one of the
really great comic novels (Those of you who
(inexplicably) think Confederacy of Dunces funny, take
note). The Snopes's are the prototypes, as it turns
out, of nearly everyone I know and am related to.

(And just an aside, speaking of comic novels; does
anyone actually find Mark Twain funny?)

<<But remember, I also love Flannery O'Conner,
especially *Wise Blood.*>>

Born earlier, I'd have proposed to Flannery O'Conner.

<<What about K.A. Porter and Donna Tartt?>>

Donna Tartt!?
