Yes, when I read about the article at
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/books/107368_gibson06.shtml I had the same
thought expressed in pynchonoid's original Subject header.  Looks like I've
been scooped!  (Though, as the Subject header indicates, I do take issue
with the NP rating on the Gibson-Pynchon connection.)

It's instructive to see how Gibson and Pynchon have been inspired by certain
terms, appropriating them for creative purposes regardless of their literal
meanings.  The terms are often science-related (even if the author doesn't
realize it).  In the Gibson cited, the term is "computer viruses."  Pynchon
has apparently done the same with "entropy" as well as "grippe espagnole"
and "tendril."  He seems to think of his use of "grippe espagnole" as an
example of "small stupid mistakes" but it's also indicative of the way he
responds to and shapes language as an artist.
