My apologies. I thought we were both referring to the article you
mentioned. I was not suggesting that you were embracing that
caricature. But the vast silent majority who made up the backdrop
against which the counter-culture projected itself seems to have
dropped off the page of history like the acid sensitive background
of a lithographic plate.

I mean, for example, can anyone seriously consider an alternative
reality, except maybe Donal Rumsfeld, in which there exists a
Republic of South Viet Nam?

It's interesting to remember, though, just for the sake of
perspective, that there were actually members of the right
wing establishment during the sixties, who advocated the use
of tactical nukes against the North Vietnamese. Old Mr.
Natural, I recall, had a field day with that one.

Times sure have changed. One thing that hasn't, though, is
the C.I.A. Just like then, they seem to be able to bridge
all the gaps. Now, for example, they are just about the
only faction that I can think of with military ties to both
Saddam and Osama. How about that! Of course, being
a child of the sixties, my memory is subject to unpredictable
bouts of entropical interference.
