Okay, I'll take up the gauntlet:
"He sat curled in an old washing machine that lay on its side in a back room
of the house; he listened to the rain going down a drainpipe and looked at a
wart that was on his finger." TSI, opening paragraph excerpt
Here we are back to the womb imagery, plus the necessary rain, and the image
of the flawed foetus. Setup for uncurling (growth) and healing, leaving the
womb and mother's (racist) influence and heading toward an autonomy without
the defect. No academic backup on this, just my thoughts. Unless, of course,
the washing machine is a metaphor for isolationism and the wart is an
indirect reference to Republican policy.
