Philippines expels Iraqi diplomat, alleging ties to terrorists

MANILA -- The Philippines ordered the expulsion of an Iraqi diplomat yesterday,
accusing him of having links to Muslim radicals blamed for a bombing in which a
US soldier and three Filipinos died in October. Second Secretary Husham Husain
was the second Iraqi diplomat in 12 years to be ejected by the Philippines. 

The Iraqi Embassy had earlier denied allegations that Husain was involved with
members of Abu Sayyaf, a radical Muslim group with suspected ties to the
terrorist Al Qaeda network. In Baghdad, the Foreign Ministry said the expulsion
was part of a US campaign to distort the image of Iraq and link it to terror.

''What astonished us was the Philippines following the US campaign of
disinformation, which spread allegations about the Iraqi diplomat having links
to the Abu Sayyaf group,'' said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.

Ople said Husain was being expelled after the National Intelligence
Coordinating Agency traced cellular phone calls from Abu Sayyaf members to the
diplomat immediately after the bombing in Zamboanga City last October. He did
not say why the Philippines was taking action now. A US special forces soldier
and three Filipinos died in the bombing, which occurred 10 days before blasts
on the Indonesian island of Bali killed more than 190 people, mostly tourists.
