Thank you for the clarification. Whew, I was beginning to doubt myself. I
had a bad dream last night that Jbor and Paul laughed at me scornfully for
all the time I'd wasted reading the Guardian because I thought Pynchon
liked it best. The humiliation...
You know, that really is an interesting interview. I just took the liberty
of re-reading it (on indymedia.org). If you look past the awkward
translation, you can see Pynchon saying stuff like that. He's fearful and
paranoid, hard on power, hard on people--it's totally in his character.
I think it's pretty slick for a writer who likes to keep his distance to
give an interview to a foreign magazine, knowing (maybe even stipulating?)
it wouldn't be directly quoted. He can say what's on his mind with the
immunity of bad translation.
