re correspondence with Playboy Japan

While it is true that we did discuss this, we never nailed anything
down. Maybe it's a hoax. Maybe not. What do I mean when I say that it
could be a hoax? That either Japan Playboy has published something with
the intention of deceiving its readers or that Pynchon himself is behind
the hoax or that a third party (not Pynchon and not Playboy Japan) is
behind it. All are possible.
Other possibilities include, Pynchon did correspond with someone at
Playboy Japan, but what they published is not accurate or is poorly put
together (this possibility was introduced with the first translation
that was posted to this list by the person who translated it for Doug),
the translation is poor (this possibility was also introduced by the
translator and by Doug when he posted it and a revised and presumably
better translation was promised and provided), the entire mess is a
misunderstanding (this is my opinion about the Wanda editorials). Of
course, Pynchon has publicly denied having written the Wanda pieces, but
the fact that he has not done so with regards to this Playboy Japan
publication doesn't mean that he won't and even if he never does it
still doesn't mean that he ever corresponded with Japan Playboy.

What's strange about all this, in my opinion, is the fact that Doug and
Kraft and others who claim to have it are unwilling or unable to provide
a copy to the rest of the list and so there are those that doubt it
exists, those that think it could be a hoax, those that doubt its
accuracy, those that doubt its significant, so on and so on ....
