It is very, very true, S~Z. As a big fan of both King Crimson and Nabokov, I
can attest to the harrowing levels of brain degeneration to which this gives
rise. In fact, pairing the two together is known in knowing circles as a
"gateway drug," and has lead numerous unfortunates -- such as myself -- down
some very dark alleys. Why, just last week I was prostituting myself down in
Alphabet city, whoring my body to slumming businessmen just for a fix of
Einstürzende Neubauten cut with a little Calvino. Happily, I was rescued by
a Patti Smith/Allen Ginsberg missionary, or who knows what would have
happened? I know a friend whose cousin knows this guy who once read a copy
of "Infinite Jest" at a Neu! concert, and to this day he hasn't come back
down, having locked himself in his hospital room and covered his walls with
rambling footnotes in meticulous German....
