There's different types of soul. Some are very earthy, and others are
ultimately a form of soulful pure logic. Some are in the middle
(Kraftwerk, Bach).
There was once this argument made about metal, that it didn't have
the soul of the blues, and thus was soulless. I pointed out to the
(drunken) blues fan involved that metal's soul is not based in
feeling and sharing pain, but in feeling and sharing the majesty of
nature / life / risk / triumph / bravery.
He would not agree, but in my view these are different types of soul.
Just as Nietzsche has soul, in an endearingly asocial way, and
Schopenhauer does, in an ultra-logical yet tongue-in-cheek way.
Personally, I find no soul in the blues; it doesn't match my spirit,
and thus is dead to me. That's not to say that I don't find soul in
my own semi-competent pentatonic riffings late at night, but these
are shaped by a different artistic impetus...
