Any joy on the place names in the story? I'd say they're all Baedeker-real
rather than quasi-symbolical allusions.

There are things I saw in the story again since the last time I read it, but
I've always and still find it impossible to read except in combination with
Chapter III of _V._ -- which is what anybody who is ever going to read it
now is going to be reading it in the context of, I'd add -- and I find it
difficult to engage with it in any narrowly self-defining way.

I remember once writing that I could see how Pynchon might be being
"didactic" -- I probably used the adjective too loosely -- though I had only
just begun to even think about the ramifications of that concept. The SL
'Intro' seems didactic in part also.
