A few thoughts:
First, you correctly characterize the mentality of most war
protestors: they are believing in absolute "good" being their goal,
and have embraced absolutist dogmas (pacificism, egalitarianism,
moralism) which have consequently programmed them to seek only
absolutes. Thus, ultimately their politics is an extension of ego
politics and thus reflects self-interest.
Then again, there are no political sides/parties in America immune to
that, as America was founded on certain (religious) absolutisms.
For example, someone (not me) might say that:

> do about that."
Is an equal and opposite moral reaction from the neoliberal
("conservative") side.
